SADE and its teams are renovating the former mining towns, which were UNESCO Heritage-listed in 2012!
From the late 19th century to the late 1980s, the municipality of Sallaumines in the Pas-de-Calais department was a major mining hub managed by the Compagnie des Mines de Courrières. To retain the population, these private companies provided high-quality housing to miners and their families.
Perfect rows of red brick housing
Between 1900 and 1930, hundreds of comfortable houses were built for miners. The houses included a pantry, outdoor toilets, a porch and small garden, and varied in surface area according to the number of occupants, with two households often living under the same roof.
Since 2012, the company Maisons et Cités, Habitat du Nord, affiliated with the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, has been managing around 64,000 housing units across 143 municipalities in the Nord and Pas-du-Calais areas.
Few miners actually live in these houses today. They are occupied by miners’ descendants or new modest-income families. For each change of occupant, Maisons et Cités carries out high-quality renovation works to the houses, prior to their re-rental or sale.
Houses renovated by the Hauts-de-France RD
Some 60 houses were renovated by SADE in 2022.
Standard works include a wide variety of deliveries incorporating all building trades and professions such as: asbestos disposal, lead removal, floor paving removal, flooring (floorboards and tiling), wall removal, doors, plaster ceiling, heat insulation, double glazing with repairs to frames, plumbing and water works, heating (including the dismantling of radiators and fireplaces), electricity, ventilation, staircases and paintwork, etc., in addition to the creation, if necessary, of additional space to house a kitchen, bathroom, toilets and/or extra living space. The foundations of these houses are relatively shallow, and SADE teams are thus called on periodically for their reinforcement.
These works to renovate and secure the houses are not just on the inside!
In all, it takes 25 weeks for a team from the Sallaumines Agency to carry out the rehabilitation or renovation works, entrusted by Maisons et Cités, on a detached house in need of repair.
The Artois-Lens Agency is hoping to renew the contract for this unique activity in a historic location, which will terminate in December 2023!
